How is tissue obtained for pathology examination?

Image
The pathologist examines cells or tissues obtained during a biopsy (a procedure that removes a cell or tissue specimen for examination by a pathologist ) or surgery, as well as cells or tissues obtained from bodily fluids. In most cases, a biopsy or surgery is required to remove cells or tissues for examination under a microscope . The following are some common methods for performing a biopsy: To remove tissue or fluid, a needle is used. An endoscope (a thin, lighted tube) is used to examine and remove cells or tissues from inside the body. Surgery is used to remove a portion or the entire tumour. When the entire tumour is removed, some normal tissue around the tumour is usually removed as well. Tissue removed during a biopsy is sent to a pathology laboratory and sliced into thin sections for examination under a microscope. This is known as a histologic (tissue) examination and is usually the most accurate way of determining the presence of cancer. Pathologists may also ...

At the 13EPUCG2023, discover more about pathology and digital pathology.

Defining pathology :  In the field of medicine known as pathology, diseases are studied and diagnosed by examining surgically removed organs, tissues, bodily fluids, and, in some cases, the entire body (autopsy). A bodily specimen's gross anatomical composition, the appearance of the cells using immunological markers, and the chemical signatures in the cells can all be taken into account. The related scientific study of disease processes , known as pathology, looks at the causes, mechanisms, and severity of disease. Cellular responses to injury, necrosis (the death of living cells or tissues), inflammation, wound healing, and neoplasia are among the topics of study ( abnormal new growth of cells ). Pathologists diagnose the vast majority of cases of cancer because they are experts in a variety of illnesses, including cancer. Under a microscope, the cellular structure of tissue samples is examined to determine whether or not they are cancerous (benign). Additionally, pathologis...

What is Diagnostic Pathology?

Image
The cause of disease is determined by morphologic and/or clinical pathology findings, as well as history, clinical signs, and ancillary test results. It is essential in all areas of pathology, both naturally occurring and experimentally induced disease. It is critical in experimental studies to distinguish between the effects of spontaneous disease and those caused by the experimental agent/test article. Diagnostic pathology is required to investigate unexpected disease or death in laboratory animal colonies or before the study is terminated. Pathology will remain important in the veterinary diagnostic laboratory for the diagnosis and prevention of spontaneous, chemically-induced disease. The value of naturally occurring chemically-induced diseases as models should not be underestimated, as these cases frequently add critical information to our understanding of the mechanisms of toxicity of these and similar chemical groups. Introduction Historically, the histologic appe...
